I Love to Tell the Story

I think I've actually posted this song somewhere before because my computer did an "automatic fill-in" for the title, but I was thinking about it last night and just how true it is. After 3 years of seminary, I love to tell the story of Jesus more than ever. In a lot of ways the basic message hasn't changed: Christ died to save sinners. But now not only do I own that statement more (including Paul's follow-up, "Of whom I am the worst"), I also understand more what it means that Christ died for sin, that he rose on the third day, that he even now lives in heaven interceding for his followers and subduing his enemies under his feet until the day that he returns. By God's grace, I will spend the rest of my life growing in love and faith in that 'old old story and awaiting the day when it becomes my theme in glory.

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love.
I love to tell the story, because I know ’tis true;
It satisfies my longings as nothing else can do.

Refrain:
I love to tell the story, ’twill be my theme in glory,
To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story; more wonderful it seems
Than all the golden fancies of all our golden dreams.
I love to tell the story, it did so much for me;
And that is just the reason I tell it now to thee.

Refrain

I love to tell the story; ’tis pleasant to repeat
What seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word.

Refrain

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.
And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,
’Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long.

Refrain

That hymn is forever linked in my mind to memories of Sunday night services in church when I was a child. Sunday night services were held in the chapel as opposed to the large sanctuary. It was a small, cozy group, and the music director let us request hymns. I loved that...
