Top Five Reasons I'm Thankful for my Parents Today

1. They are the most generous people I know.
2. They're hilarious and tons of fun.
3. I've got lots of both of them in me - so of course they're great!
4. They've always been supportive of what I do - including coming to my reallyreally ridiculously boring high school basketball games for four years - even at the end when I hardly played.
5. They've modeled for me God's work in our lives - knowing Him, seeking Him, loving Him, & serving Him.

"Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" (Matt 7:9-11)

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." (James 1:17)

You know it was people like you with your perfect family and perfect life that enraged me against God and His providence. Why did my family suffer adultery, divorce, cancer, while yours prospered and recieved numerous blessings. Who the hell are you!? But leave it to God to show me the harshness of reality and the beauty that can come from it by His grace. The Lord has blessed me for a season to be your friend, and to see how you love, how you laugh and how you share everything you have and do has made me realize that it's people like you, that make people like me, able to hope in Him. Thanks. Your friend in Seattle.

To my friend in Seattle :)

I honestly have no idea why God decided to put me in the life circumstances that He did; I do know for sure that it's not because I deserved it! I'm glad that you have seen God's goodness and His grace to you in the midst of your trials. You already know this, but here's a reminder: EVERYTHING God does in our lives is because He loves us dearly, even if the seem incredibly painful at the time. I also hope that He continues to surround you with loving (though still sinful) people who give you a glimpse of his glory.

I'm writing a paper on love right now, and I'm planning to conclude it the same way that Paul concludes his great passage on love in 1 Cor 13 -- in the midst of talking about all the great things that love does/is, he pauses to say, "Now we know in part ... Now we see in a mirror dimly, but when Christ consummates his work in this world, then we will see face to face, we will know fully, even as we are fully known." Any love we experience right now in this life pales in comparison to the joy of love that He has stored up for His beloved children!

[btw - that's part of the reason I chose my blog title - 'in a mirror dimly' ~ 'brittle crazy glass']
