Dog Names Update, etc.

Well, I must thank you all for your contributions to the dog names list. Unfortunately, that means the potential names are proliferating ... so it's a good thing I've still got time to think about it.

A little more explanation on the heretic thing: in Philippians 3:2, Paul warns his readers, "Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those mutilators of the flesh." So it's appropriate to name a dog a heretic's name; Paul called heretics dogs first! Still, I want to name my dog something that will evoke affectionate responses. In that light, I thought of "Phil" for a different reason than Jake; "philos" is Greek for "friend," and a dog is man's best friend. But it just doesn't have the right ring for a dog name.

On a completely different note (2 things):

As I was falling asleep the other night, it occurred to me that the name of our planet Uranus might have come from the Greek word for heaven/sky, ouranos. Do any linguists out there want to weigh in?

One etymology of which I am certain is that the exclamation "Eureka!" is the first person perfect active indicative from heurisko, "to find." Literally translated, "I've found (it)!" (See, languages can be loads of fun!)

And Finally...

This will likely be my last post for the next two and a half weeks. My mom and I are flying to Chicago tomorrow to help my brother move to NYC. We'll only spend a few days on each end, and most of that will be spent packing/unpacking, but I am looking forward to taking in Wicked on Broadway. The trip will come to a finale when we drive his car from Chicago to MT, since he certainly doesn't want a car in NYC.
