Welch-brilliance

I read a bit more in Running Scared this morning. A few quotes I liked:

"Prayer is evidence of humility. Prayerlessness means that we neither believe him, which is pride, nor turn to him because we prefer to trust in ourselves" (267).

"You could misinterpret other renewal times [of the covenant in the OT] as God searching out good people to make a pact with them, but Jacob makes it clear that God takes the initiative toward all kinds of people, even usurpers and connivers like Jacob. God makes promises because that is what he does. It is an extension of his extravagant mercy and grace. It is not because he is recruiting the best of the best" (260).
