The Return of the Evil Yorkies

People who know me well know that I have it in for Yorkshire Terriers.

According to a commentator for the Westminster Dog Show, they are the 2nd most registered breed in the country. Learning that was a big blow to my anti-Yorkie campaign, and I was only consoled by the fact that labs are in their 25th straight year of being #1.

Why do I hate Yorkies? Well, besides the fact that they're yappy and usually have stringy hair (or it takes constant care) and always have this "I'm-a-little-princess-so-you-owe-me" attitude, I'm not sure. But I think some of it has to do with the comic strip Grand Avenue, which will occasionally run a series with a pair of Evil Yorkies looking out a window. Above is one example. And I didn't make up the phrase "Evil Yorkies;" it comes from the strip.

Is it wrong to dislike dogs because of a comic strip? It's probably not an opinion completely grounded in reality, but we don't blame people for basing political opinions on what they read in the newspaper, so why should opinions about dogs be any different? Besides, the author of Marley and Me admits that he wanted a lab because of how they were depicted in "The Far Side," so I can't be all that wrong!

I promise a more serious post coming up in the future...

Hey, there is NOTHING wrong with posting only about dogs and comic strips!! And I agree with you about little yappy dogs that think they are cute, but actually are pretty hideous little creatures.

I love dogs, but I don't like terriers all that much either.

Thanks for the reassurance, Andrea. By the way, I've been enjoying the cute pictures of poor Cache and his cast. I hope he gets better soon!

Won Ho: Ironically, my crusade isn't against terriers in general, but against Yorkies specifically. To quote Doc Holiday ("Tombstone"), my hypocrisy knows no bounds: I have several terriers who are very dear to my heart. But the difference is that Callie and Bailey (my family's Boston Terriers) are like big dogs in smallish dog bodies -- they are rough and tough, and they'll take on anything, especially if it wants to play. Those two dogs (paired with our two 95 lb labs) are a constant source of amusement and fun.

Well, at least you can admit your hypocrisy. :) I agree that seeing terriers interact with other breeds would be fun. I just don't like it when they bark away at me!

Aww, all dogs have their cute and uncute side and I think we're probably profiling too much. Yorkshires are so glamorous - my bestfriend has one and the pooch is so prim and proper. I have a big goofy Golden Retriever who is friends with the Yorkshire and believe it or not, they go along quite well. Needless to say, the Yorkie is behaving not so "prim and proper" when my pet is around. LOL! I've been looking up the breed and found this interesting article - very interesting, I must say. As a present owner of a wee Yorkie and past owner of 5 others, I couldn't disagree more. It is in the training. Mine spoke on command and would be quiet on hand signal. Out of all of them ,I had one fear aggressive male. All the others were sweet and loving. Independent and would put themselves to bed by 8 pm. It does take a confident and strong individual to have and enjoy terriers. For they are strong willed ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜† which make them ideal mouser's and ratters. If this breed is raised like a large breed, instead of a pocket pal, they are wonderful and loving companion. It truly isn't the breed, it is the parent๐Ÿ˜‰

Spoken like someone who has never had a Yorkie. The sweetest most loyal dogs ever
